Reauthorize Sanctions Against Burma
The Burmese military regime, which has ruled the country since 1962, has been launching major counter-insurgency campaigns that have led to widespread mass atrocities against civilians of ethnic minorities. They are responsible for the displacement of over 1.3 million people, the destruction of 3,200 villages in eastern Burma and mass atrocities against civilians including rape, murder, forced labor and the widespread recruitment of child soldiers.
Take action today by asking your Representative to renew sanctions on the Burmese Junta.
The Burmese government receives much of its funding through the export of the country's few natural resources, including lumber, rubies and jade. Since 2003, the United States has prohibited the importation of these products through the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act. This Act also freezes the assets of the regime and its supporters, due to their continued brutality towards their citizens.
The Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act is up for renewal this summer. This Act is the first step toward holding the SPDC accountable and limiting the brutal Burmese military regime's access to much needed foreign revenue.
